Since joining the company, Susan has consistently made herself available to perform various support and administrative duties for the fire company. After serving several years on the fund drive committee, Susan recently took the reigns as chair of the annual mailout fundraiser. The position of mailout fund drive chair is one of the most critical administrative duties that a member can take on given that this fund raiser is our company's single largest annual revenue source One might think that as the chair of the committee, the only duties are leading the committee and ensuring that the members of the committee complete tasks on time and the fund drive goes off without a hitch. However, that is not the case with this committee. As it turns out, the mailout fund drive typically turns out as a "one man (woman) show". The chairperson many times - as is the case with Susan's efforts - ends up all falling on the chairperson. The fund drive usually runs from May through August. However, the real work begins as early as February each year. As the chair, Susan begins gathering information for the materials to be mailed which requires contacting all committees and the company leadership. Susan also make contact with the contracted company to line up the schedule for materials to be developed, printed and mailed. Many emails and telephone calls - many, many hours of effort are put into the preparation - and Susan handles it nearly single-handedly. Once the mailing is out and returns come in, Susan then handles the processing of every response - opening all of the envelopes, preparing the raised funds for our treasurer to be deposited in the bank. Susan then continues to work with the contracted company to ensure thank you notes are sent to all donators. The program begins to wind down in September but donations trickle in through the rest of the calendar year. Susan is always there making sure every donation is accounted for and processed as required. Susan has been a committed and dedicated administrative member of the Odenton Fire Company for several years and is always ready to help with any project. Therefore, Susan is very deserving of recognition as the Association's Firefighter/EMT/Administrative Member of the Quarter. Respectively submitted, Jimmie Allen President Odenton Volunteer Fire Company November 1, 2011 Mon, 05 Dec 2011 23:24:13 GMT http://www.aacvfa.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=76 Anne Arundel County 9-11 Memorial http://www.aacvfa.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=55 As we celebrate the 234th birthday of our nation, Anne Arundel County is building a powerful reminder of how we must stand united in support of freedom. A memorial will be built in honor of those who lost their lives in the terrible attacks on our country on September 11, 2001. Please be part of this historic effort to raise funds for this important memorial. The memorial features as its centerpiece two steel beams from the World Trade Center. The location of memorial is at the Fire & Police Headquarters in Millersville. The historical artifacts will honor our first responders and educate future generations about the price of freedom and the importance of vigilance. County Executive John R. Leopold first requested these artifacts from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on September 11, 2009. We want you to join us in creating a memorial of which we can all be proud. The project went live on September 8th, 2009 and is currently open to any firefighter who is employed by one of our participating departments. The primary goal of the program is to improve the alertness, health, sleep, and safety of firefighters. We plan to achieve this by providing easy access to information on topics regarding fatigue management and by screening firefighters for common sleep disorders. The 25 minute training covers topics such as the dangers of fatigue, sleep hygiene and caffeine use for alertness. If you are employed at one of the fire departments currently participating (see list on right), we would like to invite you to take part in our research study. NOW is the time to prepare, not 72 hours before the storm hits. Here are some helpful hints, including a Disaster Kit Check-Off List for your use. • Don't forget that public utilities will fail when a hurricane strikes. Utilities include electricity, natural gas, sewer services, storm water, telephone, water, internet access and cable television. It may take days or weeks before utilities can be restored. This will cause extreme difficulties that you must be prepared to endure. Ask yourself and your family now, "How will we survive without utilities for days or weeks?" • A complete inventory of personal property will help in obtaining insurance settlements and/or tax deductions of uninsured losses. Inventory checklists can be obtained from your insurance representative. Don't trust your memory! • It is a good idea to set aside certain supplies at home throughout the year in preparation for major emergencies or disasters. We recommend you keep them in a separate "Family Disaster Supply Kit" to ensure they are easy to find when you need them. Identify a safe room for storage of the supply kit. Don't forget to rotate and replace expired items throughout the year. • Remember, after a hurricane watch is issued, there is usually a very high demand and short supply of many items. • Store your kit in a convenient place known to all family members. Keep a smaller version of the Disaster Supply Kit in the trunk of your car. • Keep items in air-tight plastic bags. • Change your stored water and food supply every six months. • Review and inventory your kit and family needs at least once a year. Don't forget your pets' needs. Replace batteries, clothes, etc. Keep your kit fresh and up to date. • Ask your physician or pharmacist about storing prescription medications. • Create a list of "can't live without" items that you would want to grab in a moment's notice if you have to evacuate in a hurry. Each member of the family should be allowed a few items (keepsakes, photo albums, etc.) that will fit in the car with you. • You may want to have at least one telephone that works without electricity. These phones are easily identified as they have a single phone line and do not require a power supply cord. The phone may be stored until needed or plugged in a spare phone jack.
