EDWARD M. DUNN, SR.
Chaplain 1962-1988
Edward M. Dunn, Sr. was a charter member of the Powhatan Beach Volunteer Fire Department. The organizational meeting was held in November 1940. John Speake, Sr. Civil Defense Warden for the area, asked Ed to organize and train a ten man fire brigade. He lined up 15 to 20 men from the community and they took their training at Orchard Beach Volunteer Fire Department. When the Civil Defense was not able to keep their promise of any community succeeding would be equipped by the Federal Government, Ed looked at the group and said let’s go on without them. Under his leadership, the fire department organized, they raised their own funds, and did what was necessary to have fire protection closer than Orchard Beach. Ed remained active in the company.
Ed was active in the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen’s Association. He served as Chaplain from 1962-1988. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1997.
Ed was also active in the Maryland State Firemen’s Association. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1981.
Ed died in March 1999 at the age of 94.
