John W. “Jack” Gouty was a volunteer firefighter for 49-years. He was Chief of the Jessup Volunteer Fire Department for 15-years and was serving as Chief at the time of his death on 4 March 2008 at the age of 65 due to complications from a stroke. Jack was known for showing up at the station in the middle of the night or in bad weather to make sure the company was up and running. He was always there. He was also known as a task masker.
Jack served as President of the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association from 2007-2008. He served as the Sergeant-At-Arms from 1993 - 2004, Second Vice President 2005 - 2006, and First Vice President 2006 - 2007. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1998. Jack was noted as one of the most dedicated guys around. No matter what was asked of him, he picked it up and ran with it.
Jack was inducted in the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame in 2008.
At the time of his death, Jack was serving as President of the Association, Vice President of the Maryland Fire Chief’s Association and International Association of Fire Chiefs Eastern Division. He was expected to assume the office of President later in the year of both organizations.
