Dear Hall of Fame Committee Members,

  It is my pleasure to place the name of John J. (Jack) Hulet, Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company, as a nominee for the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association Hall of Fame Award. Since retiring from his career military position a few years ago, Jack has dedicated all of his time to EMS activities, becoming certified as an EMT instructor, serving as a daytime liaison for the AACVFA on EMS activities, and participating in the fire department’s health and wellness study group. Jack has served our Association dutifully over the past several years as our EMS Committee Chairperson. Jack also has single-handedly negotiated and received a contract award for the AACVFA to provide EMS coverage at the annual Renaissance Festival. This contract delivers an income supplement to the association’s operating fund. In recognition of his past service to the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company, the citizens of the greater Ferndale area, and to the fire service across Anne Arundel County, it is my pleasure to place Jack’s name into nomination for your consideration for the Hall of Fame Award.

On August 13, 2024, John “Jack” G. Hulet received his induction certificate and tokens into the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame (MSFA).  Jack played a key role in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) delivery, education, and policy across Maryland for nearly twenty years, including eight years on the Basic Life Support Sub-Committee of the MSFA EMS Committee.

Jack became a Maryland Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in 1999, after previously being an EMT in Pennsylvania for many years.  Jack was a Colonel in the United States Army, retiring in 2002.  He was assigned to a staff position at the Pentagon and was on duty on September 11, 2001.  As fate would happen, Jack was in the courtyard that day, and while many of his coworkers died, Jack's life was spared.  He was one of the first responders on the scene that day, providing aid to the many injured when terrorists crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon.

Jack first joined the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company, where he served as the EMS Coordinator, CPR Instructor, mentor, and Board Member.  He served as the EMT instructor for the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighter Cadet Program.  Later Jack transferred to the Odenton Volunteer Fire Company and became part of the Friday night ambulance crew for many years.  Jack had excellent patient care skills and compassion, which lead him to become a Maryland EMT instructor in October 2000.   He logged nearly 2700 hours as an EMT instructor, instructor mentor, and an instructor evaluator for the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI).  For his dedicated work as an EMT instructor, Jack was honored by the Maryland State Firemen’s Association with the Francis L. Brannigan Instructor of the Year Award in 2004.

Jack has provided valuable support to MIEMSS over many years.  In addition to serving as an EMT instructor and instructor trainer, he has been a coordinator and evaluator for EMT practical certification examinations.  Jack was intimately involved in the update of the EMT Refresher Course in 2009, 2012, and 2018.  He was also involved with the 2012 update of the Maryland EMT curriculum to conform to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians standards. 

Jack attended the MSFA convention for several years, serving as an EMT instructor and evaluator, ensuring that hundreds of Maryland’s volunteer fire, rescue, and EMS providers successfully completed their EMT recertification.  In recognition of Jack’s two decades of dedicated service in EMS delivery, training and education in Maryland, Jack Hulet received the Leon W. Hayes Award for Lifetime Excellence in EMS from MIEMSS in 2018.

Jack served several years as the chairperson of the EMS Committee of the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association (AACVFA).  In this role he served as a liaison with AACoFD on EMS operation and training issues and participated in the Health and Wellness Study Group and the Safety Committee.  Jack also single-handedly negotiated a contract for AACVFA to provide EMS coverage at the annual summer Renaissance Festival and served as the supervisor of the EMS support team.  For his contributions to the AACVFA, Jack was inducted into that Association’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
