 Leonard T. King, Sr. became a member of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department after his move from Damascus in Montgomery County. Leonard is a life member at Damascus. While a member of Deale, he served as Lieutenant and Captain on the suppression side of the house and as Treasurer for a number of years on the administrative side of the house.

Leonard was active in the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighter's Association. He served as Secretary from 1990-1992 and as President from 1996-1997. He was the Fire, Rescue, EMS Individual of the Year for 1993. He was responsible for recommending the Hall of Fame Award for the County Association in 1996 to recognize distinguished service of individuals. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2001.

Leonard was very active in the Maryland State Firemen's Association. He served as Secretary for many, many years and was bestowed the title of Secretary Emeritus when his health declined. He served as President from 1985-1986. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1988. He received the Gladhill-Thompson Trophy in 1992. He received the Robert H. Shimer Administrator of the Year Award in 2005. He received the Marbery F. Gates Service Cup Award in 2008 for 50-years of continuous and faithful service.
