Rev. John F. Long, Jr.
Past President 1999-2001
Chaplain 2002 - Present

It is an honor and privilege for the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company to submit the name of our John F. Long, Jr. in the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association Hall of Fame for 2002. John has committed 27 plus years to the fire service at the company, county, and state levels. It is our strong belief that John’s leadership and dedication record makes him most deserving of this tribute in recognition of his lifetime of service.

John began his fire service when he joined the United Fire Company (Montrose, PA) when he turned sixteen years old. A year later he joined the Montrose Minute Men (ambulance corp.). He has been active in the fire and ems service since. Even while serving on active duty with the U. S. Coast Guard (now retired). Upon transferring to the Baltimore area John joined the Powhatan Beach Volunteer Fire Company which merged with the Green Haven Fire Company and formed the Armiger Volunteer Fire Company. He held positions as a Board of Director, Vice-President, and President. He has been a Delegate to the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association since he attended his first meeting in December of 1988. He also held the line officer position of Lieutenant. In 1997 John was the U. S. Coast Guard winner and was awarded the 1997 GEICO Military Service Award for his Fire Safety and Fire Prevention Program.

John became a member of the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company in 1999 from this point John excelled through the ranks from Lieutenant, to Captain. As an active responder John is dedicated to the Thursday night duty crew as a FADO and now the Officer. He consistently responds to calls and has been recognized as one of the top ten responders at Earleigh Heights since coming to us. He also constructed a Santa sleigh on a trailer for our annual Santa runs, bringing Santa off the top of the fire engine down to street level.

On the county level John served on several committees for the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association. He was elected to second Vice-President in 1997, First Vice-President in 1998, and held the office of President from 1999 to 2001. It was during his presidency that John made changes to the county Length of Service Awards Program. Working with Chief Roger C. Simonds, Sr. and the County Executive Janet Owens he was able to increase the points for responding on calls, increasing the monthly payments, and he added the Anne Arundel Alarmers Association as participants in the program. John saw the need for the Volunteers to be included in the Anne Arundel County Fire Department Staff meetings, Chief Simonds agreed and the Volunteers have had a presence at the weekly staff meetings since. During his terms he developed working relations between the volunteers and local 1563 regarding numerous issues. He also had a website created for the association, bringing the association into the twenty-first century.

John’s leadership skills were recognized by the Maryland State Firemen’s Association President Roger A. Steger, Sr. and he was called on to Chair a new committee to the MSFA for Individual Membership. This committee is responsible for the development of the by-law changes to the Association and developing benefits for individual membership.

John was appointed by Governor Parris Glendening as a Commissioner to the Governors Commission on Service and Volunteerism. He is the first Volunteer firefighter to ever serve on this Commission since it was formed. He was nominated by President Roger A. Steger, Sr. of the Maryland State Firemen's Association.

Therefore, the officers and members of the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company deem John F. Long, Jr. to be most deserving of being inducted into the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association Hall of Fame, and thus submit his name in consideration to receive this prestigious honor.

Respectfully submitted,
William C. Smith
Secretary
