Joseph J. "Buddy" Miller
January 1, 1920 - February 15, 2012
Joseph James “Buddy” Miller, Sr. joined the Jessup Volunteer Fire Department in the mid 1930’s (no one is sure of the exact date) and served over 70-years. At the time of his death on 15 February 2012 at the age of 92, he was the oldest living volunteer in Anne Arundel County. Buddy served the Jessup Volunteer Fire Department in many positions. Most notably, he served as the company’s Treasurer for countless years only giving up the position in November 2011 after his health declined. He was the longest serving board member in the fire department.
Buddy gave unselfishly to the Jessup Volunteer Fire Department in making sure that when people needed their help they would be there ready and ever vigilant to answer the call. In his 70 plus years of service, he trained and mentored many members and when he was no longer able to respond on calls, he worked to insure that the company had the funds available to get the equipment they needed to respond.
Buddy also represented the company as a delegate to both the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Maryland State Firemen’s Association. In 1999, he was inducted into the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association’s Hall of Fame. Buddy supported his wife, Alvera (deceased January 2011), as she went through the chairs of the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association Ladies Auxiliary and the chairs of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Maryland State Firemen’s Association.
