Roy D. Pippen, Jr. joined the Community Fire Company, Inc. of Linthicum in 1946 at the age of 17. Roy’s dedication to the fire company came from his father who was a Charter Member. As a young boy in Linthicum, he would ride along to local fires with his father, spend time at Company 32 playing pool with the firemen, or just spent time learning what it takes to be a fireman.
After completing 2-years of college at the University of Virginia, Roy joined the Army in May 1951 where he was trained as a radar operator in the 4th Infantry Division stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was released from active duty as a Corporal in April 1953. He was transferred to the Enlisted Reserve Corps for the next 5-years. In August 1954, Roy was accepted at Washington College in Chestertown, MD where he studied economics and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Roy graduated in 1958. Following his enlistment in the United States Army and his graduation from Washington College in 1958, he and his wife took up residence in Linthicum Heights. Roy’s career was in banking and he volunteered for many community and church activities during his life in addition to remaining a volunteer with Company 32. He served as the company secretary for 41-years, was on the Board of Directors, and served on the Membership, Building, Finance, and Chief’s committees. Roy took care of all communications from Headquarters and the community.
Roy’s greatest passion was his lifelong service to Company 32 and the Anne Arundel County Fire Department as a whole. Roy spent many hours of his time at Company 32 compiling a huge collection of pictures and testimonies from past volunteers. His interest in the fire department was evident in his vast collection of pictures, literature, and antique toys. It was an honor for him to be able to serve the community while enjoying the camaraderie the fire department provides.
Roy had completed a rough draft of his beloved book that spanned from the original charter members of the Community Fire Company which included his father to the present. After Roy’s untimely death in 1999, his son Jason took over the duties of secretary of Company 32 to honor his father and expects to finalize his father’s book in the near future.
From 1958 to 1999, Roy was a delegate to the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Maryland State Firemen’s Association. He attended the County Association meetings and conventions when he was able.
Roy had 50-years of credited service under the LOSAP Program and had 53-years of membership at the Community Fire Company, Inc. of Linthicum. He is most deserving of induction in the Hall of Fame.
