JAMES D. SCHLOTTERBECK

James D.  (JD) Schlotterbeck began his volunteer fire service at the age of 16 with the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department.  He then served with the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company. He later joined the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Department and served in the following suppression offices:  Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, and Chief.  He held the position of Chief for 3-years.  He also served Special Operations and the Marine Division.  JD was the person behind the design for the fire boat still in service at Lake Shore.  He was instrumental in obtaining the funds for the boat by holding pit beef sales and other fundraisers.  JD also helped the Lake Shore Auxiliary with all of their fundraisers.

JD was given a citation for being on the 1987 AMTRAK call in Chase, Maryland to assist with the train derailment disaster.  The citation was received through Governor William Donald Schafer’s office.

JD was on the team of fire departments that arranged coverage on the water with the Baltimore City, Annapolis, and Anne Arundel County Fire Departments for the 1997-1998 Whitbread Round the World Race (now called the Volvo Race).  Some of the Lake Shore Auxiliary members prepared the lunches for all the sailors and JD delivered the lunches to the different sailboats.

JD was also active in the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association and a regular attendee at the monthly meetings.  He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2000.

Outside his fire department activities, JD was an Eagle Scout.  He served in both the Army and Air Force in Thailand, Germany, and Kuwait for 4-years.
