Roy L. Shirkey was an active and life member of the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department. He served on both the operational and administrative sides to include Chief and in later years President. He served on many committees including Fire Prevention, House and Grounds, Engine and Ambulance Purchases, and Training. He responded to countless fire and ambulance calls.
Roy was an active and faithful member of the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen’s Association and served as a delegate. He served as Sergeant at Arms in 1964 and as President from 1968-1969. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2000.
Roy was also active in the Maryland State Firemen’s Association and served as a delegate as well as being on several committees throughout the years. Roy was on the Credentials Committee for 15 years and served as the Chairman for several years. He could be found at the registration table every year he was able to attend the conventions even after they moved to Florida.
After his retirement, Roy and his wife, Marian, retired to Florida to enjoy life. Roy will always be remembered as someone who worked so hard to help others in need.
