Dennis C. Skinner
Past President 1981-1982

Dennis C. Skinner joined the Avalon Shores Volunteer Fire Department in April 1967 and immediately became active in the affairs of the Department. He was on the new building committee, which was responsible for replacing the original 1944 building. In September of 1967 Dennis started his first fire suppression training course.

Dennis was elected to his first office in December 1968, the office being Vice President. In his thirty-five years of service to the Department he has held the Administrative Offices of Vice-President, President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Director. Dennis has held the following Suppression Offices in the Department: Lieutenant, Captain, and Assistant Chief. He is currently the Treasurer of the Department.

In 1973 Dennis attended his first County Association meeting and became active in the Association shortly after serving on the Training Committee. In 1979 he was elected 2nd Vice-President of the Association and served as President of the Association in 1981-1982. He served as Secretary in 1983 and 1984.

Following his term as President, Dennis continued to serve the Association as Chairman of the Recruitment Committee, Secretary of the Association, and a member of the Fire Advisory Board.

June 1982 marked a new beginning in the fire service career of Dennis Skinner. He was elected the Anne Arundel County representative to the newly formed Maryland State Firemen’s Association Board of Review that was to administer the Emergency Assistance Trust Fund. At the first meeting of the Board, Dennis was elected Secretary, a position he held until 1988.

In June 1988, based upon his service as Secretary of the Board of Review and his assistance in preparing documentation to the Departments receiving funds, the Maryland State Firemen’s Association inducted Dennis into the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame.
Dennis is still active in the State Association currently serving as Vice-Chairman of the Constitution and By-laws Committee.

The Avalon Shores Volunteer Fire Department feels that with Dennis’ service to the local Department, the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen’s Association and the Maryland State Firemen’s Association that he should be inducted into the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame.

2013 Update:
