RAYBURN H. SMALLWOOD
PAST PRESIDENT
1977-1979
Ray Smallwood joined the Maryland City Volunteer Fire Department in the early 1970’s. He was previously a member of the Ackokeek Volunteer Fire Department. He is a life member.
In the mid 1970’s until the early 1980’s, Ray held dual roles. He was President of the company as well serving in operational offices to include Captain, Deputy Chief, and Assistant Chief. In the early 1980’s, he became Chief and remains in that position today (2012). Even while serving as Chief, he held the position of Vice President in the early 80’s. Ray remains very active in the fire department fundraising events and whatever else he needs to do.
Ray would rather the awards go to someone else. However, he was the first recipient of the Maryland City Volunteer Fire Department’s President’s Award in 1986.
Ray continues to serve as a delegate to the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association. He served as President from 1977-1979. He was chairman of the Chief’s Committee for many years. He has also served on countless committees over the years. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1998.
Ray is also a delegate to the Maryland State Firemen’s Association conventions and attends whenever possible. He has served on many committees over the years at the State level.
As you can see, Ray is a very dedicated member and is well known across the state for his commitment to the fire service.
