John Weedon “Johnny Boy” Smith was a life member of the West Annapolis Volunteer Fire Department. He joined the fire department in 1939 at the age of 16. He served as a volunteer for over 50-years at the time of his death. He was President for 28-years. While serving as President, he engineered the department move outside the city limits in 1969. He later served as Vice President. He was very active in fundraising and did whatever was necessary to ensure all business was taken care of.
John served as President of the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen’s Association from 1950-1951. He served as a Trustee from 1972-1990. He served on countless committees, most notably the Fire Advisory Board. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1997. Each year at convention, the John “Johnny Boy” Weedon Smith Volunteer Station Commander of the Year Award is given out.
John served as President of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association from 1954-1955. He served on countless committees as well. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1979. In 1993, he received the Gladhill-Thompson Trophy. This award is to honor an individual who has made outstanding contribution to the future welfare of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association. This is the highest award that can be conferred on an individual.
