Donald "Warren" Wood
Donald “Warren” Wood was a charter member of the Maryland City Volunteer Fire Department joining in 1966 when plans were begun to form a volunteer fire department. Warren was among 26 area residents to join the Jessup Volunteer Fire Department for the sole purpose of taking the basics course. He received his Certificate of Completion for Basic Training held on 21 July 1967. He was the first life member at Maryland City.
Warren served as Lieutenant from mid-1966 to mid-1968. In mid-1968, he served as Captain until mid-1971. He then became Chief and served for eight consecutive years (mid-1971-mid-79). He served as Captain again from 1980-81. In mid-1979, Warren was elected to the office of treasurer. He held that position for 14 consecutive years (1980-1993).
As early as November 1967, Warren was recognized for the many long and arduous hours he put into painting, erecting, designing, and coordinating the refurbishing activities attendant to whipping the temporary fire house into one fit for a fireman. He received the Firefighter of the Year award in 1977 and 1979. He was also EMT of the Year in 1979. Warren and his wife, Carolyn, were the recipients of the Rescue Person of the Year in 1980.
Warren was noted for his cole slaw. Whenever there was a picnic, holiday party, etc. it was a given that he would bring cole slaw. He was excellent in making wood items and donated same for raffles, door prizes, etc.
Warren was a delegate to the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association meetings. Although it is unknown what committees he was involved with, he was an active member. He was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1998.
Warren was also a delegate to the MSFA convention meetings and he truly enjoyed attending the conventions each year.
Warren was also a member of the Maryland City Auxiliary. He joined in June 1980 and was grandfathered into life membership in May 1997. He served as Vice President of the Auxiliary from 1983-85.
Warren passed away in July 1997.
