Mary Agnel "Jill McKenzie, our beloved member and friend, Mary Angel McKenzie, fondly known as "JILL". Born into this life August 14, 1941, passed from this life
March 31, 2018.
The membership of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad is Proud that Jill was a member of our Ladies Auxilary. Jill joined the Auxiliary, following in
the foodsteps of her Aunt, Berp Clairage, in 1957 at the age of 16 years old.
Jill was very active in all the auxiliary activities after joining. She worked the Oyster Dinners and Roast, Carnivals, Bake Sales and other fundraising events to help rais money for equipment and other needs of the department. Jill could always be depended on to bake and donate the most delicious cakes for our bake sales. She was best known for her wonderful Pound cake and it was always a treat when she would shre them with everyone after the monthly meetings.
She was a member of the Marching Unit traveling all over the county for parades. The unit would travel to Ocean City in June and participate in the Maryland State Firemens' Convention Parade. Jill's son jimmy and daughter JoAnne traveled with the Marching unit in the early 1980's as banner carriers. She made sure they attened the practices and got them ready, with their crisp white shirts and gloves to march in parades.
Jill went on to represent Deale on the county level. She was very active in the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association Ladies Auxiliary. She served every office of the Auxiliary from Chaplain to Vice-President along with serving on some committees. She was President of the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Associaion Ladies Auxiliary in 1977-1978. For her hard work and dedication, she was inducted into the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Assciation Ladies Auxiliary Hall of Fame in 2003. In 1982, after 25 years of service, Jill became a Life Member of the Deale Ladies Auxiliary.
Besides her work over the years with the Deale Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, her love of baking, and spending time with her childrren and grandchildren. She loved being outside gardening. She had many gardens and beautiful flowers and plants in and out of her home. Jill was an avid bowler for many years. She loved the sport and played on leagues. Her teammates were like another family to her.
Jill is survived by her son James "Jimmy" McKenzie and daughter Joanne Custis. Along with one grandson and two great-grandsons.
She is truly missed and will forever be a part of the history of our department and the community that she loved and served.
