Marie M. Soutar, 89, recently of Derby, Kansas, formerly of Orchard Beach, Maryland, died Friday, November 21, 2014, in Wichita Kansas of natural causes.

Marie was born to John and Marie Miller August 12, 1925, and grew up in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore. A childhood injury and growing up during the Great Depression led Marie to a life of service. She married the love of her life, David Soutar Sr., July 28, 1944, while David served in the U.S. Navy. Both David and Marie sacrificed completing high school to support their families. After the war Marie started work at the Social Security Administration as a clerk typist, earned her GED and worked her way up to senior management before retiring in 1978.

When David joined the local volunteer fire department shortly after moving to Orchard Beach in 1950, Marie joined the department’s ladies’ auxiliary where she rose through the ranks to become president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association in 1988. Marie was an avid gardener who, in her retirement years, raised prize-winning orchids in a greenhouse David built onto their home.

Marie and David joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1992. Her sweet, loving service in various leadership and teaching callings led to many fond and devoted friendships with her brothers and sisters in Christ.

She is survived by a large extended family that includes her daughter, Carol Soutar of Glen Burnie, Maryland; son, David Soutar Jr. of Greenland Beach, Maryland; son, Paul Soutar and wife, Deborah, of Derby, Kansas. Marie’s family includes 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
