The Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association is proud to announce the Outstanding Member of the Quarter for the Third Quarter of 2022.
The officers and members of the Odenton Volunteer Fire Company (OVFC) are very proud to nominate FFI Thomas L. Lutz for the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association’s Outstanding Member of the Quarter Award for the Third Quarter of 2022.
Our fire company is comprised of many members with diverse talents and backgrounds, such as Dr. Tom Lutz, DDS. Tom is a dentist who established his practice in the heart of the Odenton business district. Dr. Lutz joined OVFC in September 2017 with a strong desire to help the community where he practiced. Initially he was interested in being an Emergency Medical Technician due to his medical background. He completed the EMT-B course in 2018 and started to ride on our BLS ambulance. To further his value to our company, he also completed the courses and training required to become an ambulance driver and Firefighter I. Tom is also planning on taking Firefighter II soon so that he can qualify to ride our rescue engine and ladder truck.
Firefighter I Lutz is a committed member of our Sunday daytime crew, working a nine-hour shift. It’s rare that he misses his duty day, and if so, it’s because he is taking continuing education courses to maintain his dental license. He rides or drives the ambulance or rides on the fire engine as needed. Tom responds on an average of about 110 fire and ambulance calls per year. He is calm and confident during an emergency response. He steps forth to assist with station housekeeping and apparatus cleaning. He willingly participates in our fundraising and public events. Firefighter I Lutz is also a CPR instructor, providing vital life-saving training to our members and the public.
One of our members, who was not one of his regular patients, experienced a dental emergency over the weekend. Dr. Tom, as we affectionally call him, gladly opened his office and provided the necessary urgent treatment to alleviate the member’s pain. He also gently removed the loose “baby” tooth of a member’s friend’s child in our station parking lot. (It’s handy to have a dentist around.)
We are very fortunate to have professional members of our community like Dr. Lutz as a part of our fire company. Firefighter I Tom Lutz is a very dedicated and competent member, and we proudly recommend him for consideration as the AACVFA Outstanding Member of the Quarter.
