AACVFALAPP Jane F. Huffman

Jane F. Huffman is a Life Member of the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company (LSVFC) and Auxiliary and is an extremely dedicated member.  She was born into the fire service as her father, William Harrington, was the first Chief of the LSVFC in 1945.  Her mother Gertrude Harrington was a very active member in the Ladies Auxiliary and was a Past President.  Jane helped at the various fundraisers as a child.  She joined the fire company side on 19 January 1994.  On the Ladies Auxiliary side, Jane was the driving force for activating the third Ladies Auxiliary and served as President, Vice President, and Secretary.   She served on many committees for the Auxiliary.

On the LSVFC side, Jane served on the Board of Directors and was Company Secretary for 6-years.  She has been active in fundraising for the company and is the driving force behind the Lottery Calendar fundraiser which she is chairman.  She is a regular worker at the Monday night bingos and other fundraisers held by the company.  She is past Historian for the LSVFC and is the unofficial company photographer.  She served on the LSVFC Fire and Life Safety committee.  She received the Chief’s Award in 1995, the Peg Mekins Award in 2007, and the Chief’s Award again in 2009.

For a few years, Jane was a member of the Orchard Beach VFD and Ladies Auxiliary.  She was the driving force in starting the Orchard Beach VFD All-Day Scrapbooking and Pre-teen dances.  She was also involved with their Fire Prevention program. 

Jane is Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association having served from 1999-2000.  Jane’s mother, Gertrude, served as President from 1955-1956.  Due to declining membership in the County Ladies Auxiliary, Jane has been filling officer chairs the past several years to include Secretary and Historian in order to keep the Ladies Auxiliary going.  She has served on many committees most notably Fire Prevention and Safety.  She goes above the call of duty to get the word out about fire prevention.   She has arranged for speakers to come to the meetings to speak on different topics of interest.  Jane was inducted in the Ladies Auxiliary Hall of Fame on 8 July2003.  Her mother was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1996.  In 2011, Jane was one of three Past Presidents that had the Auxiliary portion of the Convention book dedicated to her. 

On the County Association side, Jane has served as secretary on the Constitution and By-laws rewrite committee which was a tremendous undertaking.  For the past several years, she has been Chairperson of the Public Relations committee and has done an outstanding job with posting events on the Association web site and preparing periodic newsletters.  Jane is also on the Convention Book committee.  She ensures all the ads submitted are accurate, paid for by the due date, and money turned in to the Assistant Secretary in a timely manner.  From 2013-2014, Jane served on the President’s Advisory Council.  She has served for several years on the Fire Prevention and Life Safety committee which is her true calling.  Jane’s favorite part of fire prevention is working the Fire Safety House and teaching children and adults alike about safety and prevention.    Jane was instrumental in winning the D. Edgar Hurlock Award for LSVFC in 2001 and Orchard Beach VFD in 2002 and 2003.  She also wrote the nomination for Glenda Gross of Lake Shore who was the winner of the D. Edgar Hurlock Award in 2014.  Jane enjoys photography and loves to share her photos with the members.  Many of the photos are posted on the Association web site.

Jane is active in the Maryland State Firemen’s Association and Ladies Auxiliary.  She has served on the LAMSFA Fire Prevention committee for many years and served as Chairperson for several of those years.  She serves as one of Lake Shore’s delegates to the MSFA convention.  She is also active with the MSFA Fire Prevention and Life Safety committee.  She brings the fire prevention messages back to both the men’s and ladies sides at the state and local level.   In 2003, Jane received the Fire and Life Safety Educator Award from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.  She was instrumental in the AACVFA winning the MSFA Fire Prevention Award for the Year Round Project for the Fire Safety House activities in 1996.  She also wrote the nomination for Glenda Gross of Lake Shore who was the winner of the Silver Spring trophy in 2015.  Jane was inducted in the LAMSFA Hall of Fame in June 2007.  Jane’s mother, Gertrude, served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Maryland State Firemen’s from 1963-1964.  Mrs. Harrington was also elected in the LAMSFA Hall of Fame in 2002.

Jane is active in her community to include Friends of Downs Park, the Marine Corps League, and the Senior Center.  Jane is serving as a Secretary of the Friends of Downs Park and has held that position for several years.  She is also on the Ways and Means committee.  She very often chairs fundraisers to benefit all these organizations.  She is truly a devoted and dedicated volunteer.  No matter what effort Jane takes on, she gives it her all and it is always a success.


2020 Individual of the Year

Jane F. Huffman of the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company (LSVFC) is the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association (AACVFA) Individual of the Year award winner for 2020.  Jane’s write-up was submitted by the Trustees of the Association.

Jane also heads up the bimonthly All-Day Scrapbooking event with the proceeds going to the annual installments of the LSVFC New Rescue Engine. For the last three years, she has served once again as President of the LA AACVFA. She did not seek reelection for the fourth year. She has served on many committees most notably Fire Prevention and Safety. She goes above the call of duty to get the word out about fire prevention. She has arranged for speakers on different topics of interest to come to the monthly meetings. She organizes bus trips and other fundraisers for the LA AACVFA fundraising efforts. On 8 July 2003, Jane was inducted in the LA AACVFA Hall of Fame. Her mother was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1996. In 2011, Jane was one of three Past Presidents that had the Auxiliary portion of the Convention book dedicated to her.
