Russell L. Schlick
Chief
Date of Birth:
Date of Death: 1/6/2022
Dear Hall of Fame Committee Members,
It is my pleasure to place the name of Russell Schlick, Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Company, as a nominee for the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association Hall of Fame Award. For many of us, Russell is best known for his long standing tenure as Chief of the Green Haven Volunteer Fire Company. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, Russell developed quite a reputation for his aggressive firefighting style as he led the Green Haven company. Russell remained a member of the Armiger Volunteer Fire Company when the Green Haven and Powhatan Beach Volunteer Fire Companies were merged in 1990. However, Russell’s fire service career gained new life in 2002 when the Armiger Volunteer Fire Company dissolved it’s corporate charter and the members were reassigned to the Riviera Beach Volunteer Company. Russell reacquired the necessary qualifications to enable him to participate as an equipment driver and continued to serve in an active response role as part of the Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Company. In recognition of his past service to the Green Haven, Armiger, and Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Companies, the citizens of the greater Pasadena area, and to the fire service across Anne Arundel County, it is my pleasure to place Russell’s name into nomination for your consideration for the Hall of Fame Award.
Sincerely,
David W. Lewis

SUBJ: NOMINATION FOR HALL OF FAME FOR RUSSELL SCHLICK
I respectfully submit a request for consideration for Russell Schlick to the AACVFA Hall of Fame. This man has done an outstanding service to the county and has paved a many paths for the volunteers. He joined the Green Haven Volunteer Fire Company in 1948 and advanced to the position of Chief in 1954. He was instrumental in getting the first Aerial ladder in the 2nd Battalion. He serves as a Delegate to the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Maryland State Firemen’s Association for more than thirty-nine years. He currently assists the AACVFA Fire Prevention Committee with hauling of the trailer. He currently still rides the apparatus at age seventy-three, he holds Life Membership status with the Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Company. As a young member watching how Chief Schlick operated on the fire ground I was very motivated and wanted to achieve the rank of Chief which I did.
Thank you for your time,
Kenneth Hyde, Sr., Chief
Obituary:
Russell Lee Schlick, 88 yrs old, a lifelong resident of Pasadena, MD passed away Thursday, January 6th 2022 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
Mr. Schlick was born October 11th, 1933 in Baltimore MD to the late Mr. Malcom Schlick and Levon Rader-Schlick.
Russell has been a volunteer Fireman since he was 15 years old. He volunteered at Green Haven Volunteer Fire Department, Armiger Volunteer Fire Department and Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Department. He loved everything that involved the Fire Department.
Russell adored his reconditioned antique fire trucks. Those trucks were exhibited at truck shows, participated in parades, carried and honored fallen firefighters and even attended a wedding. Russell and Tim funded Santa Claus for 15 years thru the streets of Green Haven throwing candy canes to kids. Many firemen through the years have volunteered to drive the fire trucks to these events. In recent years, Bob and Dominic Hay and Ricky Katsaros were faithfully there to drive to all events.
Russell loved to feast at the local restaurants, such as Honey Bee, Johnny’s Family Restaurant and Denny’s.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved sister Hazel Thompson. He is survived by his niece Tracey Kelley, nephew Melvin Olson and steadfast best friend and caretaker Tim Johnson. Daniel Pitts was his roommate for 33 years. Mr. Pitts, who worked with Russell in the earlier years and later years, cared for him like he was his father.
