Jane F. Huffman of the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company (LSVFC) is the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association (AACVFA) Individual of the Year award winner for 2020. Jane’s write-up was submitted by the Trustees of the Association.
Jane is a Life Member of the LSVFC and Auxiliary and is an extremely dedicated member. She was born into the fire service as her father, William Harrington, was the first Chief of the LSVFC in 1945. Her mother, Gertrude Harrington, was a very active member in the Ladies Auxiliary and was a Past President. Jane helped at the various fundraisers as a child. She joined the fire company side on 19 January 1994. On the Ladies Auxiliary side, Jane was the driving force for activating the third Ladies Auxiliary and served as President, Vice President, and Secretary. She served on many committees for the Auxiliary. On the operational side of LSVFC, Jane served on the Board of Directors and was Company Secretary for 6-years. She has been active in fundraising for the company and is the driving force behind the Lottery Calendar fundraiser in which she is chairperson. Jane also heads up the bimonthly All-Day Scrapbooking event with the proceeds going to the annual installments of the LSVFC New Rescue Engine. Before COVID-19, Jane was a regular worker at the Monday night bingos and other fundraisers held by the company. She is past Historian for the LSVFC and is the unofficial company photographer. She served on the LSVFC Fire and Life Safety committee. She received the Chief’s Award in 1995, the Peg Mekins Award in 2007, and the Chief’s Award again in 2009. For a few years, Jane was a member of the Orchard Beach VFD and Ladies Auxiliary. She was the driving force in starting the Orchard Beach VFD All-Day Scrapbooking and Pre-teen dances. She was also involved with their Fire Prevention program.
Jane is a Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association (LA AACVFA) having served from 1999-2000. Jane’s mother, Gertrude, served as President from 1955-1956. Due to declining membership in the LA AACVFA, Jane began filling officer chairs to include Secretary and Historian to keep the LA AACVFA going. For the last three years, she has served once again as President of the LA AACVFA. She did not seek reelection for the fourth year. She has served on many committees most notably Fire Prevention and Safety. She goes above the call of duty to get the word out about fire prevention. She has arranged for speakers on different topics of interest to come to the monthly meetings. She organizes bus trips and other fundraisers for the LA AACVFA fundraising efforts. On 8 July 2003, Jane was inducted in the LA AACVFA Hall of Fame. Her mother was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1996. In 2011, Jane was one of three Past Presidents that had the Auxiliary portion of the Convention book dedicated to her.
The AACVFA has benefitted from Jane’s hard work. Jane has served as secretary on the Constitution and By-laws rewrite committee which was a tremendous undertaking. For the past several years, she has been Chairperson of the Public Relations committee and has done an outstanding job with posting events on the Association’s web site and preparing newsletters. She ensures that company fundraisers are sent to Fire Headquarters for possible inclusion in the weekly orders. This was prior to COVID-19 when fundraisers were able to be held. Jane is also on the Convention Book committee. She ensures all the ads submitted are accurate, paid for by the due date, and money turned in to the Assistant Secretary in a timely manner. From 2013-2014, Jane served on the President’s Advisory Council. She served for several years on the Fire Prevention and Life Safety committee which is her true calling. Jane’s favorite part of fire prevention is working the Fire Safety House and teaching children and adults alike about safety and prevention. Jane was instrumental in winning the D. Edgar Hurlock Award for LSVFC in 2001 and Orchard Beach VFD in 2002 and 2003. Jane enjoys photography and loves to share her photos. Many of the photos are posted on the Association web site. Jane was inducted in the AACVFA Hall of Fame in September 2016.
